New York Youth Development Survey

In 2008 the New York Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) contracted with Pride Surveys to conduct the New York Youth Development Survey (NYYDS).

The Survey gathers essential information to combat adolescent problems such as gambling, underage drinking, smoking and drug use. The survey and comprehensive results are invaluable tools in prevention planning and evaluation. Over the summer, guided by OASAS, we have updated the NYYDS. We reduced the number of questions allowing for less time to complete the survey. We also updated questions regarding certain prescription and non-prescription drugs to best determine the types of substances being reported.

Several new questions were added to address student perception regarding parent and police response and consequences to student drinking. Additional emphasis was added to the consequences that drinking has on young people. All in all, these improvements have created a more comprehensive and tailored survey for the State of New York.

The new 2011 NYYDS is being administered as part of the state’s SPF-SIG grant. If you are not a part of the SPF-SIG, you can chose to conduct the 2011 NYYDS in your county or community on your own. As a participant, you will receive a report of the findings based on the responses of your participating students. This report will, to the greatest extent possible, be consistent with the size and representativeness of the student sample and contain detailed survey prevalence estimates.

Your district can choose to survey the total student population to gain a more complete analysis of the district and/or individual schools in each district.
