Pennsylvania may issue “school climate” requirements

After a study showed Pennsylvania schools to be no safer than five years ago, the state school board president said school climate measures might be required of all districts, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

“Clearly, more must be done to change the climate of our schools,” Gerald Zohorchak, Pennyslvania’s Secretary of Education, said.

Zohorchak was one of several state school chiefs who attended an October meeting at the US Department of Education to discuss the school climate movement. ISA/Pride Surveys president Doug Hall also attended that meeting and wrote about it in this space on Oct. 28.

Is smoking on the rise?cigarette

In September we brought you news that cigarette smoking is on the rise among students ages 11 to 18. The 2009 Pride Survey National Summary found that 30-day prevalence of cigarette smoking by students in grads 6-12 rose from 19.4% in 2008 to 19.8% in 2009.

Now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that cigarette smoking has increased slightly for the first time in 15 years among adults as well. According to the CDC, the percentage of persons aged ≥18 years who were current cigarette smokers rose from 19.8% in 2007 to 20.6% in 2008 (National Health Interview Survey).

The Washington Post reported that this was the first increase in 15 years.

You can read the full CDC report which was published in Mobidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
