Some 20 grants of
approximately $300,000 each would seek to reduce alcohol abuse in secondary
schools. The application deadline is March 26. Eligible grant applicants
are local education agencies (LEAs) who do not currently have a Grant
to Reduce Alcohol Abuse. The project period is 36 months.
The Secretary of
Education may reserve up to 25 percent of the funding to award grants
to low-income and rural LEAs. Complete
details.
Funding
Available for More Drug-Free Communities
Approximately 60
new anti-drug coalitions will be funded under the FY 2007 funding cycle
for the Drug-Free Communities Support Program (DFC). Current clients of
Pride Surveys have an advantage in winning one of these grants. Assessment
and evaluation accounts for 42 of the 100 points used in scoring applications. The
application deadline is April 17.
If your coalition
cannot demonstrate your ability to collect and report on the four core
outcome measures, contact
Pride Surveys immediately. You'll obtain a free Drug-Free Communities
Core Measures Report when you administer one of our student surveys.

Help with your proposal.
To assist you with writing a DFC proposal, we asked Keri-Lyn Coleman,
former administrator of the program, to provide tips for a successful
proposal. Read
her advice. To read the grant announcement, visit the White House

State
Grants Program in Danger Again
Community Anti-Drug
Coalitions of America (CADCA) has issued an alert about a “draconian”
proposed cut in the States Grants Portion of the Safe and Drug-Free Schools
and Communities Program. CADCA urges you to visit its website to send
a message to Congress opposing the proposed cut. CADCA offers a free,
easy-to-use fax system that will generate a letter to your congressional
representatives. The organization reminds you that even if you are a public
employee, you can use this system if you do so from home. To learn more,
visit CADCA’s Legislative
Alert Center.
Pride
Surveys appears before Education Secretary’s Advisory Committee
Doug Hall, senior
vice president, represented Pride Surveys before the Secretary of Education’s
Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Advisory
Committee last week in Washington. The committee was discussing data
collection. Also appearing on a panel with Mr. Hall were Michael J. Herrmann,
executive director, Office of School Safety/Learning Support, Tennessee
Department of Education, and Howell Wechsler, director of the Division
of Adolescent and School Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Transcripts
of the meeting will be available soon at the Department’s web site.
And
the Winner Is
Heath Mitchell of
the Oregon Partnership was the winner of a 30 GB iPod given away by Pride
Surveys during the CADCA Leadership Forum. We congratulate Heath and thank
the hundreds of people who visited our exhibit booth and attended our
workshop. CADCA’s staff did an amazing job of organizing the conference
under adverse weather conditions.
