Gallup: Teens Worry About Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs Believe it or not, school starts this week in certain parts of the country. And what is the most important problem facing teens as the 2006-07 school year begins? According to The Gallup Poll, it’s drugs, smoking and alcohol. Asked “What do you think is the most important problem facing people of your age today?” Gallup found that 31% of teens answered “Drugs/smoking/alcohol.” That’s far ahead of other choices like “Education” (14%), “Violence/gangs” (6%), and “War/draft/terrorism” (3%). For more information you can visit The Gallup Poll web site. You will be asked to sign up for a 30-day free trial. According to the 2004-05 Pride Surveys National Summary, 63% of students in grades 6 to 12 say their friends would “Disapprove” or “Strongly Disapprove” of their using illicit drugs. Only 18% said their friends “Don’t Disapprove.” Administering a Pride Survey is one way to find out what the situation is in your school or community. Funding Alert! The Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools has announced a grant competition for school-based student drug testing programs. The grants provide funds to local education agencies (LEAs) to support development and implementation of drug-testing programs in schools. The estimated range of awards will be from $70,000 to $200,000. An estimated 12 sites will be awarded. The deadline for applying is Sept. 5. You can find applicant information at the U. S.
