PRIDE SURVEYS HOME

Threats with Weapons Are Often Carried Out

Against the backdrop of three recent and deadly school shootings, educators and others are taking seriously any threat involving a weapon. Data from the Pride Survey show that when threats with weapons are made, they are often carried out.

The Pride Survey National Summary 2004-2005 shows that 6 percent of students in grades 6-12 reported that they threatened another student with a handgun, knife or club while at school.

Four percent of students reported that they actually hurt another student with those weapons, and 4 percent said they were on the receiving end of an assault with a weapon.

During the same year, 4 percent of students said they carried a handgun to school. When not at school, students were far more likely to carry a gun “for protection or as a weapon” (14%).

Threats involving hitting, slapping and kicking are more common than weapons threats. More than a third of students said they threatened (35%) or were threatened (38%) with hitting, slapping or kicking. And nearly a quarter of students (23%) say they were afraid another student might hurt them at school.

While these numbers are chilling, it is important that school administrators understand the school climate of their building in order to prevent harmful episodes. To learn how to administer a Pride Survey, visit our web-site.

It should be noted that only one of the three recent school shootings, in Cazenovia, Wisconsin, involved a student assailant. The attacks in Bailey, Colorado, and Paradise, Pennsylvania, were carried out by adult male school intruders.

SDFSC Advisory Committee to Meet
The next meeting of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Advisory Committee will be held Oct. 23-24 at the U.S. Department of Education, Barnard Auditorium, 400 Maryland Ave., SW, Washington, D.C.

The topics will be the unsafe choice option and persistently dangerous schools, as described in No Child Left Behind.

The committee will make recommendations to the Secretary of Education on future plans for the SDFSC program. Efforts have been made to eliminate the State Grants portion of the SDFSC program, which directs funding to all school districts in the US, and to shift those funds to national discretionary programs that would benefit far fewer school systems.

If you wish to comment, email the Office of SDFSC. More information.

“Low cost, fast turn around time and an extremely useful report…what more can a prevention coalition ask of a survey? The Pride Surveys Risk and Protective Factor Survey has provided us a ‘road map’ and given our rural community the data that has helped us identify our needs and priorities, as well as assist us in tracking our progress.”
