Casual Ecstasy Use Linked to Brain Damage

Educators who are debating barriers to learning might look no further than the developing adolescent brain.

Research presented this week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) shows that exposure to ecstasy might permanently damage the brain in low-dose, first-time users.

According to the Pride Surveys National Summary, the rate of annual ecstasy use by students in grades 6- 12 averaged 4.3% over the past four years.

Among 12th graders, 5.2% reported annual ecstasy use in the past school year (5.4% lifetime use according to the latest findings from the National Institute of Drug Abuse Monitoring the Future Survey).

There are approximately 25.6 million students in grades 6-12, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics.

Customer Comment
“Low cost, fast turn around time and an extremely useful report…what more can a prevention coalition ask of a survey? The Pride Surveys Risk and Protective Factor Survey has provided us a ‘road map’ and given our rural community the data that has helped us identify our needs and priorities, as well as assist us in tracking our progress.”
